Farhan Akhtar was born in Mumbai to screenwriters, Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani. His stepmother is the actress Shabana Azmi. He is also cousin of Bollywood ace choreographer and now director Farah Khan. Farhan was the main lead in his twin sister, Zoya Akhtar's directorial debut Luck By Chance.
He entered Bollywood at the age of 17, assisting directors and cinematographers. He dropped out of college and did various jobs like working for a TV production house and setting up his own production house, Excel Entertainment with childhood friend Ritesh Sidhwani.
Farhan made his directorial debut with 2001's hit, Dil Chahta Hai. His next was Rock On!! (2008). He acted and also produced the film. The film became an instant cult film just like Dil Chahta Hai (2001). Rock music was a rage in the country after the success of this album.
He has also hosted a show called Oye! It's Friday! (2008), which was a celeb talk show with a tinge of comedy. He was last seen on-screen in the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dubara with Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol.
Farhan is married to Adhuna Bhabani Akhtar, a hairstylist. They have two daughters: Shakya and Akira.
