Amrita Singh

Biography

Amrita Singh was born on 9th February 1958. She was born in a prominent Punjabi Sikh family which hailed from Pakistan. Her father Shivinder Singh served in the armed forces. Her mother, Rukhsana Sultana, a renowned socialite, is best known for her political activism during the Emergency Era. Amrita Singh\'s paternal grand-uncle is the renowned author Khushwant Singh. In 1991, Amrita gave up acting and married with actor Saif Ali Khan, who is twelve years, her junior. The couple had two children: a daughter named Sara and a son named Ibrahim. She made into bollywood in 1983 with Betaab, a hit film in which she paired with the debutant Sunny Deol. This was quickly followed by a number of hits, such as Sunny in, Mard and Saaheb, Chameli Ki Shaadi and Naam in, Khudgarz.She made a successful pair in several films not only with Sunny Deol, her co-debutant, but also gave hits with Anil Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan, who were two leading heroes of that era.

After her wedding in 1991, she undertook virtually no new films; however, she tried some negative roles in this period. The super hit Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in 1992 and Aaina in 1993 were those in which she played such roles. But even with these successes, she disappeared from the marquees after 1993. In 2005 she returned with a character role in a television serial. In 2007, she played the role of the gangster Maya Dolas\'s mother, Ratnaprabha Dolas, in the Sanjay Gupta?s film Shootout at Lokhandwala.Her last release was the anthology film Dus Kahaniyaan where she appeared in the short story Poornmasi. She is one of the most attractive actresses of her time, and perhaps the only one who had a lead role with both Dharmendra and his son, Sunny Deol, and has proved to an actress who is not afraid of doing negative roles. In 2004 Amrita and Saif Ali Khan decided to separate, and eventually divorced. The children, Sara and Ibrahim, are with their mother.
