Pooja Entertainment & Films Ltd., Super Cassettes Industries Pvt Ltd and Legend Studios' Sarbjit is based on a true story about the ordeals of an Punjab based innocent farmer, who gets arrested by the Pakistani police. Out there, he is not just treated in a bad, merciless and inhuman manner, but also made to rot in the jail for countless years. The film is also about Sarbjit's sister's incessant perseverance to ensure his freedom.
Sarbjit (Randeep Hooda) is a simple villager staying with his family near the Indo-Pak border. His family consists of his wife Sukhpreet (Richa Chadhha), his two daughters Swapan and Poonam, his father (Ram Murali Sharma) and Dalbir Kaur (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), who gets separated from her husband (Ankur Bhatia), because of his physical and mental torture towards her.
One night, when Sarbjit gets drunk with his friend Maninder (Trishan Singh), he crosses the Indo-Pak border by mistake, where the Pakistani cops find him loitering on their soil. They immediately arrest him and put behind bars. What starts after that is the start of Sarbjit's endless ordeals. What happens after that is what forms the rest of the film.
