Bound by the norms and rules of the society and adapted from the novel Rau, Bajirao Mastani revolves around the undying love of Peshwa Bajirao for the Muslim warrior Mastani.
Peshwa Bajirao, a happily married man with a son, has an ambition to conquer the entire nation for the king. With the support he receives from his mother and his wife Kashi, he decides to fight a war along with Bundelkhand after the king
s daughter Mastani seeks help from him. It is the passion of Mastani and the bravery of Bajirao that bring them closer as love blossoms. Though unconventional, Mastani decides to go to any lengths to stay besides Bajirao, including playing the role of a dancer at his court as per the instructions of Bajirao
s mother. As their love turns into marriage thereby followed by Mastani
s pregnancy, Kashibai too gets pregnant with their second child. The two deliver baby boys, however, Bajirao
s mother refuses to honour Mastani as a part of their kingdom as well as accept her child. The film further traces the journey of Bajirao as he struggles to find acceptance of his love and the unconditional love of Kashibai towards her husband despite his infidelity.
