Despite CC2C being a failure Akshay Kumar is still the best bet in the Bollywood. And to be true despite all critics and reviewers writing off Chandni Chowk to China, it may still throw a surprise by performing decently at the box office.
Akshay Kumar has given blockbuster after blockbuster. He says that out of his last 21 films 17 have been hits. Till late last year it was commonly agreed that Singh is Kinng is the biggest hit of the year. But later Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi happened. But despite being similar or bigger hits no film could claim to have undermined Singh is Kinng.
When asked as to what was the secret behind his consistency and what was his success formula, the actor says, ?If you want, I can write down my secret formula so that people remember it all their lives. Okay, first you write Om. That?s what I always do. Then comes dedication, which is followed by talent. Subtract arrogance. Divide it by luck. That is equal to hit machine. But, tell you what, prayers work much better than this formula or maths?.
On the question as to why critics always try to take a dig at him, he says, ?I don?t care what critics have to say about it. I really like my people and want my audience to be entertained. I want to make them laugh. They come and spend 150 rupees on a ticket. What do they want? Koi ro ke nahi jaana chahta yaar. (Nobody wants to leave the movie hall feeling sad.) Everybody wants to laugh?.
Is the success something to do with numerology? All his recent hits have been numerically corrected! Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa were amongst them. Welcome, by default added up well, did well too.
Akshay Kumar astrologer sometimes ago said, ?We spelt Singh Is Kinng and are glad to know that the collections are historic, and it has got the highest opening by ?any film?, leave alone an Akshay starrer. We had asked Vipul to release the film on the 7th to avoid releasing on 08/08/2008 as that date would have been inauspicious for Vipul. In fact on the 7th, the film had a paid premier in 150 theaters across the country.
During the 90s, Kumar was primarily described as the action hero of Bollywood, starring in hit action films such as Khiladi (1992), Mohra (1994) and Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), and being particularly known for his "Khiladi Series". However, he was simultaneously recognised for his performances in romantic films like Yeh Dillagi (1994) and Dhadkan (2000) as well as dramatic films such as Ek Rishtaa (2001), showing his versatility to perform a range of roles.
In 2002, he won his first Filmfare Award under the Best Villain category, for his performance in Ajnabee (2001). Willing to change his intransigent image, Kumar later ventured mostly into comedy films. His comic performances in films such as Hera Pheri (2000), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Garam Masala (2005) and Jaan-E-Mann (2006) met with critical acclaim. His success further rose in 2007, when he starred in four consecutive commercial hits. Having done so, he has established himself as one of the prominent actors of the Hindi film industry.
Akshay Kumar while talking to a leading newspaper Times of India poohpoohs that his film was a flop but goes on to accept that he is not a superman who could ensure that his every film was a hit.
?But my so-called flop has generated Rs 45 crore in the first weekend... it?s the fourth highest, three-day box office collection in the history of Bollywood. Besides, I never said this was the greatest film ever made. I told everyone, ?It?s a senseless film, leave your brains at home.? I accept it for what it is, I love it for what it is, and I will stand by it and say that?s the film we wanted to make and we made. I pray you like it, and I?m sorry if you don?t. But I didn?t break my back doing it to have my own fraternity later stab me from behind...? the actor stresses while talking to the Times of India.
